Another scrapyard on an infamous East Flatbush block went up in flames on Monday night.

Another scrapyard on an infamous East Flatbush block went up in flames on Monday night.

Firefighters responded to a junkyard fire at 5811 Preston Court shortly after 10 p.m. on Oct. 12, per the FDNY, and were met with smoke and flames rising behind a tall metal wall.

They were forced to cut through the wall to get into an adjacent lot, where they pulled in tower ladders to shoot water into the flaming junkyard. More than 140 firefighters fought the flames for nearly two hours, and finally managed to get it under control just before midnight.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, or how much damage it had caused, though the FDNY confirmed there were no injuries.

The yard at 5811 Preston Court is operated by Brooklyn Resource Recovery, a metal recycling facility that buys construction scraps, old appliances, end-of-life vehicles, and more, according to its website. Brooklyn Resource Recovery did not respond to request for comment.

Preston Court, a heavily-industrial three-block stretch south of Ralph Avenue, is lined with industrial businesses and junk yards and has been plagued by near-constant fires in recent years. Since the summer of 2021, at least six fires have sprung up at scrap yards and auto body shops , on the block, with the most recent reported less than two months ago .

A 2021 fire at S&A Scrapyard, a few doors down from Brooklyn Resource Recovery, was believed to have been caused by an electric scooter battery.

At the time, S&A owner Sal Vallario told Brooklyn Paper that Brooklyn Resource Recovery had frequent fires, which he attributed to the company’s shredding machine, which pulverizes vehicles and other scraps.
